GE Dishwasher Error Codes

GE dishwashers flash a C-code (or LC) when the control detects a fault. Here's what each code means and the first thing to try.

C1

Means: Drain time exceeded 2 minutes — the pump could not empty the tub quickly enough.

Fix: Clean the drain filter and air gap, check the drain hose for kinks, and run the garbage disposer if the hose ties into it. A clogged sink drain is the most common cause.

C2

Means: Total pump-out exceeded about 7 minutes — a more serious drain blockage.

Fix: Clear the drain hose and sump, check the check-valve, and confirm the drain pump runs. If the pump hums but no water leaves, the impeller is jammed or the pump has failed.

C4

Means: Overfill — the tub filled twice (often after a power failure) because the float switch stuck or the sump is clogged.

Fix: Gently tap the plastic float cover on the tub floor to free a stuck float, then clear the sump. If it returns, test the float switch and water-inlet valve for sticking.

C7

Means: Water temperature sensor (thermistor) circuit is open or out of range.

Fix: Power the dishwasher off at the breaker for about 30 seconds and restart. If C7 returns, the temperature sensor or its wiring harness needs service.

C8

Means: Detergent dispenser cup is blocked and cannot open fully.

Fix: Make sure nothing (tall items, caked detergent) blocks the dispenser door. Clean the cup and hinge; if it still won't open, the dispenser assembly needs replacing.

LC

Means: Leak detected — the leak sensor in the base found water.

Fix: Stop the cycle and check for a popped-out rubber seal at the sink hookup, loose hose clamps, or a leaking sump gasket. Dry the base pan before the sensor will clear.

FAQ

How do I fix a C1 code on a GE dishwasher?

C1 means the dishwasher took too long to drain. Clean the filter and air gap, straighten the drain hose, and run the disposer if the hose connects to it. Most C1 faults are a clogged filter or a blocked sink drain, not a broken pump.

How do I reset a GE dishwasher?

Turn the dishwasher off at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds, then restore power. This clears most temporary C-codes; a code that comes straight back points to a hardware fault.
